The series of “Anne with an e” is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables. If you’re going to watch this, you’ll definitely noticed that it screams about feminism. It portrays the boys or men does have more privilege while women are being mistreated and look down to their capabilities.
Here are some of the scenes that appears to and proves that there is an enormous difference between the men and women treatment and opportunities. It shows that women’s responsibility is to do all the household chores and marry as if their roles were just to be a ‘wife’. Anne Shirley Cuthbert appears to be the voice of women to this series that women have also rights and tell their opinions or hear their voice.
You’ll see a scene from episode 1 season 1 that the sister of Matthew is disappointed or more look like irritated in my perception when Anne came because they were expecting it to be a boy so that it could help his brother Matthew to do the works in the farm since his brother is already old and can’t do the work by himself. They think that the girl would be such just a burden since she’s a girl. It reveals that women like Marilla were eaten or used with this kind of system from the way she reacts however Marilla eventually adopted Anne in episode 2 and in episode 3 Marilla together with the other mothers mentioned about feminism and she began to think about it somehow change her perception.
This is just the beginning of the criticism because there’s more. It also screams about race and difference with the social class even education. There are scenes like in episode 8 in season 2 that there is an invisible barrier between the white and colored people as well as to the people who is educated and who doesn’t.
From the movie, there is Sebastian a friend of Gilbert Blythe met from the ship working with coals experienced discrimination from shops and even from his fellow ones.
There is also Jerry the boy who helps or works to the Green Gables. From the episode 5 in season 3, we’ll notice that Jerry and Diana fell in love with each other but you’ll see the difference between their social status and education. Jerry is a boy who can’t read from the start and was only able to learn it later after Anne taught him how to and his family is poor while Diana seems to be the princess that is wealthy and well-educated from the way she acts, speak and dress up.
This also applies to the Indians in the episode of season 3, they’re afraid or avoiding them because they perceived them as savages from the way they live as well as their beliefs.
This series is indeed great. It serves as an eyeopener about Feminism and Marxism. (These scenes are only screenrecord from a movie app)
